Description & Appearance:
At 7-8 pounds, the Affenpinscher breed weighs in with the toy group. The coat is thin and stiff and a medium length. The face and ears are bushy and shaggy all around giving them their monkey like characteristics. Some also relate their characteristics to that of the terrier with their prominent stance, high cocked tail, erect ears, box-like frame and terrier-like personality. They typically are black, the preference for most Affenpinscher breeders, but also seen with gray, silver, black, tan and beige.Temperament:
Often referred to as “little ruffians with a swagger”, they are a fearless toy breed. Fearless as they are, they are also loyal and protective of their family, playful and adventurous, and quite energetic. They make great travel companions, for their size and for their stamina. This German breed is tough, and can keep up with the active family. They can be great with kids, but care should be given to their temperament. Stubborn and territorial, they can attack if provoked. Small children should be supervised around Affenpinscher’s for this very reason. Their terrier attitude also makes them tough to train. They need firm guidance if they’re to be housebroken.
Health:
This sturdy breed has no known genetic problems and tends to live long healthy lives, up to 14 and 15 years.Care & Grooming:
Affenpinsher’s adjust well to apartment life, but need regular exercise. They can get their exercise indoors by playing with their toys and their owners. They really burst with energy outdoors and is recommended that they take regular walks. They enjoy wide open spaces, and with their inquisitive nature, will naturally burn off their energy. The cost of care for this breed is small as this breed doesn’t shed much and their coat doesn’t require clipping. Their coats do need a weekly bushing.
History:
Bred to be a ratter, today’s toy dog still is very apt to hunt mice and other rodents. Originally much larger, up to 14 inches, and they had colors such as red, black, tan, gray, fawn, gray and tan, black and tan and with a white chest and feet. Their European origin dates back to the seventeenth century. We have since seen this breed miniaturized the last couple centuries for companionship and as a house pet.More Information:
