Description & Appearance:
At 10 pounds, the Chinese Crested, either the Hairless or Powederpuff is a lovely dog with a slender light framed body and a most unique coat. For the Hairless types, a prominent feature with this breed is its hair on different areas of the body. It sports a crest on its head, a plume on its tail, and socks on the feet and toes. Their hair is soft and sleek as well as their skin. The coat may have a variety of colors, mixed or solid. The same is true for their skin which may be dark, light, or anything in between. The Powderpuff has a complete coat, also soft and sleek.Temperament:
The Chinese Cresteds have charming personalities and characteristics. They have a unique howl which to some sound like they’re singing. Another trait unique to this breed is their smile. They make great family pets and are a constant joy for anyone seeking a companion dog.Health:
This breed requires special attention to its skin. Sunscreen is used to prevent over-exposure to skin while moisturizers can be used to prevent dry skin and acne.Chinese Cresteds live long healthy lives and one can expect 15 years for a healthy Crested.
Care & Grooming:
Care and grooming costs will be slightly higher with this breed given the attention to their skin. Sweaters are needed in cold weather climates, and you’ll find they’re just irresistible in a cute poncho or jacket. This Powderpuff is an average shedder. They have a double coat and they need a daily brushing to its undercoat to prevent matting. Baths and crèmes for the hairless keep their skin soft and supple. This Crested sheds very little, but the effort in grooming matches that of the Powderpuff.
History:
The Hairless Chinese Crested is one of today’s four hairless breeds. The other three are the Mexican Hairless, the Inca Hairless, and the Peruvian Hairless Orchid. This Toy breed has roots in China since the 13th century. Little is known beyond that however there is support that it has much older roots in Africa.More Information:
