Description & Appearance:
The Maltese is an elegant dog for its long silky white hair falling to its feet. Its hair is typically 8 inches and longer and is nearly always white. Sometimes, a crème color is found. It has beautiful black eyes and muzzle atop its round head. The drop ears are greatly feathered with long hair and the tail arches across its back in a long haired plume. They move with an impressively quick and flowing gait which gives this breed an air of self-importance.
Temperament:
Bred to be a companion dog, this breed has many of the qualities one seeks in a toy dog. They are intelligent and fun-loving. They enjoy playing outdoors for a game of fetch or chase-em’. They can exhibit amazing speed and agility, even indoors where they’ll find a long twisty path through the house to sprint.
Housebreaking can be of average difficulty. Overall, this dog easily learns new tricks and behaviors. They’re watchdog ability is good, but friendly if you let a stranger in. It is important that this breed be socialized well as a puppy. This hardy breed does not need to be coddled or pampered, but certainly enjoy cozy evenings on your lap.
Health:
This breed, like many other toy breeds, have its ailments, but is generally hardy and resilient. Luxating Patella is common among small breeds and with the Maltese as well. White Shaker Dog Syndrome is a disease affecting only dogs with all white coats and is characterized by tremors through out the body.
Maltese can live a happy 12 to 15 years on average.
Care & Grooming:
Maltese thrive well indoors and don’t do well in extreme weather. Since bred as a companion dog, they cannot be left outdoors. They don’t have a double coat or fur, and therefore don’t shed. This is great for those allergic to dogs as this breed is hypoallergenic.
They require moderate exercise as they are sometimes bounding with energy. The occasional walk or romp through the park will suffice. Bear in mind, they’ll run through the mud with much delight, so be prepared for the occasional bath.
Their coat requires a daily brushing to keep the tangles out and to keep their coat healthy. They eyes need a gentle cleaning often to prevent staining. Ears should be checked and cleaned regularly.
History:
The Maltese have been traced back to the Isle of Malta in the Mediterranean See thousands of years ago and through migration, became the favorites by the monarchs of the time. Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots were alleged to have possessed this dog.
