Description & Appearance:
Poo-chins are a new hybrid dog crossed from a Japanese Chin and a Poodle. This cross loses much of the oriental features of the Japanese chin with its upturned nose, eyes set wide apart and feathered ears. They have short floppy ears, sometimes with a curled back tail with a coat with soft curls. This mix can have many different coat colors.Temperament:
Poo-chins are a fun-loving, alert and affectionate mix breed. Poo-chins are also much quieter and reserved then their other dog friends, stemming from its Japanese Chin heritage. They’re not barkers and like to stay clean. As one might assume, they are friendly with other cats and pets.Health:
Japanese Chins have been known to have congenital defects such as Luxating Patellas and heart murmurs. Because of their flat faces, they also tend to have breathing problems. These problems are likely to disappear with the poo-chin cross.Poochins in good health can live up to 10 years of age.
Care & Grooming:
Poochins thrive well indoors and require only moderate exercise. They don’t do well in extreme weather. They are eager to please, but still require a little extra work to housebreak.Poo-chins shed an average amount. Poo-chins should be trimmed regularly by a professional groomer to keep the hair from matting. This mix needs the occasional brushing to keep the coat clean. Bathe as necessary, but not often.
History:
As a hybrid breed, their history is short. Generally, Poochin breeders aim to breed one generation of Poochin from purebred Japanese Chin and Poodle parents. This is to take advantage of “hybrid vigor” and the Heterosis effect which results in a healthier, more vigorous dog with a reduced chance of genetic disease. Pure breeds and inbreeds often carry genetic disease. Heterosis is the phenomenon where crossing two inbred lines can yeild a progeny with superior genetic constitution. This increased health and vigor does not create a superior breed, but the advantages obtained from it is what produces hybrid vigor. This goal in this scenario is not to create a new breed, but to create a happy and healthy pet.
