Schnoodle Characteristics
Schnoodle Description & Appearance:
Schnoodle are a hybrid dog, crossed from a Schnauzer and Poodle. Size can vary as breeders may cross a Miniature or Toy Poodle with a Miniature Schnauzer; mix a Standard Poodle with a Standard Schnauzer or Giant Schnauzer, or any cross between. Their coats are usually a solid color with soft wavy curls.
Schnoodle Temperament:
Schnoodles are a mix of personalities from the Schnauzer and Poodle. Like the Schnauzer, they are alert and playful. Like the Poodle, they are highly intelligent, and well-tempered. The combination of the two produces an easily trainable, energetic and freindly mix.
Housebreaking should be easier with this mix as the Poodle is known to be one of the sharpest dogs around. They’re watchdog ability is good, but friendly and mild-mannered if you let a stranger in.
Schnoodle Health:
Schnoodles have no known genetic problems yet. As this popular mixed breed becomes more prevalent, signs of its genetic robustness will become clearer, but as it goes with mixed breeds, they’re generally healthier than pure breeds.
This breed in good health can live up to 15 years of age.
Schnoodle Care & Grooming:
Schnoodles shed very little. They also produce very little dander, a plus for allergy sufferers. They do have a lot of hair however. Many owners have their Schnoodle trimmed regularly by a professional groomer to keep the hair from matting. This mix needs the occasional brushing to keep the coat clean. Bathe as necessary, but not often.
Smaller Schnoodle’s may adjust well to apartment life, but need regular exercise. They can get their exercise indoors by playing with their toys and their owners. All Schnoodles really burst with energy outdoors and is recommended that they take regular walks. They enjoy wide open spaces, and with their inquisitive nature, will naturally burn off their energy.
Schnoodle History:
As a hybrid breed, their history is short. Generally, Schnoodle breeders aim to breed one generation of Schnoodle from purebred Schnauzer and Poodle parents. This is to take advantage of “hybrid vigor” and the Heterosis effect which results in a healthier, more vigorous dog with a reduced chance of genetic disease. Pure breeds and inbreeds often carry genetic disease. Heterosis is the phenomenon where crossing two inbred lines can yeild a progeny with superior genetic constitution. This increased health and vigor does not create a superior breed, but the advantages obtained from it is what produces hybrid vigor. This goal in this scenario is not to create a new breed, but to create a happy and healthy pet.
