Shiffon Characteristics
Shiffon Description & Appearance:
The Shiffon is a cross between the Brussels Griffon and Shih Tzu.
Shiffon Temperament:
You can expect the temperment of a Shiffon to be a blend of its parents. They are intelligent and confident. They enjoy the company of others, humans or other pets. Both parent breeds have charming characters to them, which make this mix the same. Shiffons are gentle natured and can be a little mischievous. They are good with obedience training and pick up tricks easily too. They are generally good with children, but can be snappy if teased.
Shiffon Health:
Shiffons tend to be very healthy. They shouldn't exhibit any of the congenetal defects Shih-Tzus or Brussels Griffon may carry.
Shiffon Care & Grooming:
Shiffons will shed an average amount. The coat for this mix is short and stays clean. Bathe as necessary, but not often.
Shiffons can get all of their exercise indoors, but will enjoy the chance to run off leash at the local dog park. Housebreaking Shiffon puppies should come fairly easily when given close attention, but watch out for their sometimes stubborn attitude.
Shiffon History:
As a hybrid breed, their history is short. Generally, Shiffon breeders and breeders of other hybrid breeds aim to breed one generation of Shiffon from purebred Shih-Tzu and Brussels Griffon parents. This is to take advantage of “hybrid vigor” and the Heterosis effect which results in a healthier, more vigorous dog with a reduced chance of genetic disease. Pure breeds and inbreeds often carry genetic disease. Heterosis is the phenomenon where crossing two inbred lines can yeild a progeny with superior genetic constitution. This increased health and vigor does not create a superior breed, but the advantages obtained from it is what produces hybrid vigor. This goal in this scenario is not to create a new breed, but to create a happy and healthy pet. The Shiffon breed is only recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club.
