Description & Appearance:

Westiepoos are a hybrid dog, crossed from a West Highland White Terrier and a Poodle.

Temperament:

Westiepoos are a mix of personalities from the Westie and Poodle. Like the Westie, they are full of themselves, not realizing their own size. Like the Poodle, they are highly intelligent, and well-tempered. The combination of the two produces an easily trainable, energetic and freindly mix.

Housebreaking should be easier with this mix as the Poodle is known to be one of the sharpest dogs around. They’re watchdog ability is good, but friendly and mild-mannered if you let a stranger in. This hardy mix does not need to be coddled or pampered, but certainly enjoy cozy evenings on your lap.

Health:

Cataracts and hip dysplasia are common genetic problems plaging Poodle purebreds. Westie purebreds often have skin problems, liver disease and Perthe's disease. These problems should be less seen with the Westiepoo mix as the mixing of the two breeds should see a strengthening of the genes.

They don’t do well in the cold, so they’re often found bundled up in a blanket or wearing a sweater in the colder months.

This breed in good health can live up to 15 years of age.

Care & Grooming:

Westiepoos shed very little. They also produce very little dander, a plus for allergy sufferers. They do have a lot of hair however. Many owners have their Westiepoos trimmed regularly by a professional groomer to keep the hair from matting. This mix needs the occasional brushing to keep the coat clean. Bathe as necessary, but not often.

This breed is an indoor breed and suited well for apartment life. They get much of their exercise running through the house and battling their toys. At the same time, they’re very active and enjoy traveling with you or taking the occasional walk.

History:

As a hybrid breed, their history is short. Generally, Westiepoo breeders aim to breed one generation of Westiepoo from purebred West Highland White Terrier and Poodle parents. This is to take advantage of “hybrid vigor” and the Heterosis effect which results in a healthier, more vigorous dog with a reduced chance of genetic disease. Pure breeds and inbreeds often carry genetic disease. Heterosis is the phenomenon where crossing two inbred lines can yeild a progeny with superior genetic constitution. This increased health and vigor does not create a superior breed, but the advantages obtained from it is what produces hybrid vigor. This goal in this scenario is not to create a new breed, but to create a happy and healthy pet.
