Zuchon Description & Appearance:

Zuchcon dogs are crossed between the Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu making for a compact and sturdy hybrid dog.

Zuchon Temperament:

Playful and lively, the Zuchon is a social companion full of spunk. They have a happy temperament as well as gentle, self-assured and well-mannered. They are alert and intelligent, much like their predecessors. They can be stubborn, making them more of a chore to housebreak. Some have a tendency to bark. Zuchons are however obedient and great with caring children. They make very good family pets and will keep up with an active lifestyle.

Zuchon Health:

Like most hybrid breed dogs, Zuchcons are very healthy and should not exhibit any of the congenital defects from often seen from pure breeds and inbreeding.

Zuchon Care & Grooming:

Zuchons are hypoallergenic making them great for allergy sufferers. Their soft curly coats are kept up by weekly brushings to keep them clean and free from tangles.

This mix requires only moderate exercise and does fine with life indoors. Given their social temperament, they may feel slighted if they cannot accompany their masters when leaving the house. Overall, they make great indoor pets.

Zuchon History:

As a hybrid breed, their history is short. Generally, Zuchons breeders and breeders of other hybrid breeds aim to breed one generation of Zuchons from purebred Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu parents. This is to take advantage of “hybrid vigor” and the Heterosis effect which results in a healthier, more vigorous dog with a reduced chance of genetic disease. Pure breeds and inbreeds often carry genetic disease. Heterosis is the phenomenon where crossing two inbred lines can yield a progeny with superior genetic constitution. This increased health and vigor does not create a superior breed, but the advantages obtained from it is what produces hybrid vigor. This goal in this scenario is not to create a new breed, but to create a happy and healthy pet. The Zuchons breed is only recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club.
