So I went to my pet store that has been bought by a new company a few days ago.   This new store sells most everything  as they used to but no longer carries my Royal Canin brand of food. They say they no longer carry brands that have by-products such as rice.   Does this sound right to any of you?  The store staff have suggested EVO dog food.   I like the look of the ingredients but what is so wrong with rice in our dog''s food?
Any thoughts from the tiny track parents? They do also carry Merrick Dog food as well, I have thought to maybe switch Zsa Zsa to this brand.  Any Merrick users?

I can't really give you a properly educated answer regarding the rice.  I am not as up on food research as I should be.  But I am assuming that they meant they are not going to carry brands that have a high amount of rice.  If rice is the bulk of the food it has no nutritional value.  And there for the food is of poor quality.

However, Evo, is an excellent brand, I highly recommend it.  Jack is on California Natural which is made by the same company.

It sounds to me that your local Pet store is moving towards; promoting and supporting holistic diets. Good for You!!  Smiley
I have two local pet stores where I purchase my foods from. I have to buy from them because they are the only two places where I can find Bristol's diet. Chain Pet Stores (i.e. Pet Land, Petco, Petsmart, etc.) usually don't carry the holistic brands because people are not as informed. Therefore, there is not many buyers. It's all about supply and demand.

There was once upon a time when I'd not recommend feeding Evo to toy breeds but they have improved their products drastically. In fact, Evo is what Bristol is now being feed.

The first four listed ingredients in pet foods are the base of the diet. EVO is different than most - their main ingredients are derived strictly from meat-based sources including turkey, herring meal and chicken fat. The result is a nutrient-dense product that supplies your pet the energy it needs throughout the day.

EVO first five ingredients: Turkey, Chicken, Turkey meal, Chicken meal, Potatoes.

Royal Canin First five ingredients: Chicken meal, brown rice, rice, oatmeal, chicken fat.

Based on just the first five ingredients, I'd have to say that Royal Canin display is not as apealing or healthy as Evo.

Evo's website has a page where you can compare Evo brands to their competitors. Royal Canin is not even on the list. http://www.evopet.com/tools/comparison.asp

Another good link (FAQ on diet ingredients) http://www.evopet.com/tools/faqs.asp?view=ingredients

Nature's Variety is a GREAT raw diet but it has never worked out well for me.

I LOVE Merrick. They actually have whole chicken wings in some of their cans. I have been a loyal to this brand for a very long time. If you do a search on TinyTrack, you will find some very interesting topics/threads pertaining to Merrick Dog Food. I remember, there was a time when everyone here was feeding it to their fur-kids and who all didn't have it, someone would willingly provided it. IT WAS A MUST TRY!!  Wingalings are the BEST!!!

Thank God the store provides samples!  Zsa Zsa likes the EVO and the kibble is small enough. I don't like the looks of the Royal Canin ingredients.
Now, I have to know, do these other brands make the poo stink?  I do not want to walk in my backyard and smell the stereotypical dog poo smell!   ugh,  Some random dog came and did his business in my front yard and the smell just turned my stomach upside down! He had to be eating the lowest brand there was, ugh
I do appreciate your comments.   I think I will stick to the EVO, and the price is better than Royal Canin!!  Grin Cha Ching!
