Pugs are most often characterized by their flat wrinkly face. They have a flat muzzle and large prominent eyes. They have a short and compact body with a curled tail resting atop their back. Most common coats on a Pug are fawn colored with a black mask. Solid back coats are rare, silver even rarer.
Temperament:
Pugs make great companion dogs. They socialize well with children, other pets and strangers. They have animated personalities which often demand attention from their owners. Pugs were bred for human companionship and so they exhibit many qualities one might want when selecting a breed for this purpose. They are extremely loyal, affectionate, cheerful, playful (and sometimes rowdy), and cuddly. They enjoy the occasional walks and leisurely evenings lying comfortably in your lap.
The Pug's good nature also makes them responsive and obedient.
Health:
Pugs are sensitive to extreme climates and can catch colds easily. Because of its short muzzle and poor airways, a it can develop breathing problems. For this reason also, they have a tendancy to wheeze and snore. This is often ok, but one must be careful thier little Pug does not over-exert itself.
A Pug's eyes are large and their corneas often get scratched. They have healthy appetites, so over-eating can become a problem if not watched.
A very small percent of this breed develop Granulomatous Meningoencephalitis which is an inflammation of the brain. It is a fatal disorder and will live only a handful of months following a diagnosis.
Other than the above, Pugs are a generally healthy and resilient breed reaching ages of 14 to 15 years.
Care & Grooming:
This breed tends to sheds on the high side of average, more during the spring. Their coat is easy to clean with a brush or damp towel. The creases in a Pugs face should be wiped regularly.
History:
Pugs bred not for physical characteristics but for human companionship and personality. They are thought to have descended from the Pekingese and Bulldog in Tibet, China around 700 BC. They were the favorites of nobility from China to Europe.
